The entrance to Marché Jean-Talon in Montréal

A summer tradition

Montréal has become one of our summer traditions, even if we have skipped a few years along the way. Its list of exceptional restaurants always feels endless.

This time, we returned for the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal—and, naturally, made room for a market morning. French food and a market walk seem to belong together.

Enough to fill a morning

Marché Jean-Talon wasn’t enormous, but it was more than enough to fill my morning. Walking through it made me wish there were more markets like this in the U.S.—woven into daily life and easy to reach, rather than saved for a special outing.

Knowing what you do best

What stayed with me most was the way of life around the market. I loved seeing small shop owners, young and old, happily doing what they know best. There was something quietly inspiring in that confidence—and in the simplicity of work rooted in care.

A simple kind of abundance

It reminded me that perhaps a good life can be simple: a market close to home, good food on the table, a place of your own, and the people you love nearby.
